The University of Macau is a leading higher educational institution in Macao and is making strides towards becoming internationally recognized for its excellence in teaching, research and service to the community. The University is growing rapidly with a number of new strategic initiatives including the relocation to a new campus and the establishment of the largest Residential College system in Asia. The new campus will be 20 times larger than the present one with a projected increase of 40% in student intake and faculty size. English is the Universitys working language.

The Department of Portuguese invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in the area of Spanish Language and Culture.   

The Department of Portuguese has a teaching staff of over 20 members, including speakers of both European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese. The Department offers an undergraduate degree in Portuguese Studies, concentrating on Portuguese as a Foreign Language, with selected courses in Interpretation and Translation, Foreign Language Pedagogy, Literary Studies and History. The Department also teaches Portuguese Language within the Faculty of Law and offers elective courses in Portuguese as a Foreign Language to students from all faculties of the University. At the postgraduate level, the Department of Portuguese offers two Masters programmes (an MA in Portuguese Language and Culture and an MA in Translation Studies) and PhD studies in Portuguese Linguistics and Translation Studies.

The Department offers a Minor in Spanish Language and, with over 200 students currently enrolled in Spanish as a Foreign Language, it is planning to strengthen its teaching staff and establish Spanish as a language discipline amongst the University of Macau students. The Department of Portuguese is pleased to announce the opening of the Assistant Professor position in Spanish Language and Culture (post subject to final approval).

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a PhD degree in Spanish or a relevant area and have native or near-native speaker proficiency in Spanish. Applicants should have a solid record of tertiary teaching experience and a record of research and publication at the international level. Experience either in the Teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language or the teaching of the candidates particular discipline to speakers of Spanish as a foreign language in addition to experience with curriculum design will be advantageous. A record of administrative experience at the tertiary level and capacity for leadership will be considered an asset. The appointee will be required to teach courses at the undergraduate level and oversee the Spanish Language Course. 

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in January 2014.

Position and Remuneration
Remuneration and appointment rank offered will be competitive and commensurate with the successful applicants academic qualification, current position and professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
