Teacher of French and Spanish - Kirkcudbright Academy

http://www.eteach.com/microsite/jobdetails.aspx?vacno=493305&Page=1
Job Advert
Teacher of French and Spanish (Ref: 7/10302)
Kirkcudbright Academy
Unpromoted Teacher Scale
Kirkcudbright Academy serves the pupils of Kirkcudbright and the surrounding area, with a roll of 490 pupils. Kirkcudbright is a picturesque harbour town on the banks of the River Dee and it is the fishing industry, along with farming and various food processing firms that provide significant employment in the area. The main industry of Kirkcudbright and the surrounding area is tourism. Visitors are attracted by the beauty and peace of the surrounding countryside, both hills and coastline, the colourfully painted local houses and by Kirkcudbright’s reputation as The Artists’ Town, having been the home of and inspiration to Hornel, EA Taylor, Oppenheimer, Jessie M King and others. In addition, the wide range of leisure, cultural and sporting activities add to the appeal for holiday makers – as well as making this a highly desirable place for family life. In a recently published ‘Times’ list of the 30 ‘coolest’ places to live in the UK, only three were in Scotland – Kelvinbridge in Glasgow, Stockbridge in Edinburgh and Kirkcudbright.
Kirkcudbright Academy is non-denominational and also serves the town of Gatehouse of Fleet, the villages of Borgue, Twynholm, Dundrennan and Auchencairn and the agricultural hinterland. The school sits in the middle of the town, at the axis of the historic High Street, in pleasant, landscaped grounds. In one direction the building looks onto the Tolbooth, rooftops and gardens of the old town and in the other across to the estuary of the river Dee. A school has existed in Kirkcudbright since 1455 and it moved to its present site in the 18th century. In that time there have been many changes to the building itself: some of these are on-going, with building underway to add a Trades Workshop, refurbish the Cochran Hall to make it into a Performing Arts centre, and renew the central 1960s section of the building.
The school is well-known for innovative and successful approaches to learning and teaching. For several years, we have organised learning in school over 3 stages: S1, S2-S3, S4-S6. This means that we are already well on the way to implementing structures advanced in Curriculum for Excellence as we have operated a combined senior timetable for the past 7 years. We are proud of the achievements of our pupils, from performance in SQA exams, to debating, drama and enterprise successes, to competitions in music and sport and other areas and to the commitment that pupils show to the school. Academy pupils are given a strong lead by staff and community to encourage personal and collective responsibility, care and compassion, ambition, honesty and respect for difference and diversity.
The school motto is ‘Radicem Firmant Frondes’ (the leaves and branches strengthen the root) and we see this continuing to be relevant to our 21st century school community. Our aim is to provide a meaningful and effective education for all our pupils. We seek to achieve this by creating a caring learning and teaching environment where staff can deliver a vibrant and flexible curriculum which is responsive both to the needs of individual pupils and those of a changing society. Central to this is a strong partnership between staff, pupils, parents and the wider community, all working together in pursuit of the above aim; the pupils are the roots from which the school’s strengths come.
Applicants for teaching posts must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland, Clerwood House, 96 Clermiston Road, Edinburgh, EH12 6UT.
This post is considered as Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG scheme update check prior to formal offer of employment being made by Dumfries and Galloway Council.
